2017 marks the beginning of Steve’s fourth decade in the legal field,  After graduating from Penn State, Steve received a paralegal certificate and worked for four years as a litigation paralegal at two of Philadelphia’s oldest and most highly regarded law firms.  This background proved valuable for Steve’s law school career, as did internships with the State of Maryland Attorney General’s Office, the United States Department of the Interior and the District of Columbia City Council.  During his second and third years of law school, Steve worked as a research assistant with nationally renowned expert in law and forensic sciences, Professor James E. Starrs.  In this role, Steve was published in the quarterly publication, “Scientific Sleuthing Review” and was featured in Time Magazine as part of Professor Starrs’ team investigating the death of explorer Meriwether Lewis. 

After law school, Steve worked as a law clerk for The Honorable Paul Ribner of the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas in the Homicide and Major Civil Trials Divisions.  Steve then worked for a total of four years as an associate at two mid-size insurance defense firms in the greater Philadelphia area, before accepting a position in the national property subrogation/recovery department of White and Williams LLP.

In 2008, Steve’s family convinced him to move south to Florida, so after passing the Florida Bar and grudgingly giving up his Penn State football season tickets, Steve accepted a position to establish a dedicated subrogation department at a mid-size law firm in South Florida.  In 2010, Steve founded Stephen L. Barker, P.A. and began practicing subrogation law for his own firm.  He has subsequently expanded the practice to include insurance defense, commercial litigation, and condominium and homeowners’ association work.   

In 2017, Steve joined WES Litigation Group LLC as of counsel.

Steve is active in the National Association of Subrogation Professionals (NASP), the South Florida Claims Association andthe Windstorm Insurance Network and has lectured for various insurance groups and insurance companies on topics related to subrogation and property damage

Steve lives in Boca Raton, Florida with his wife and twin teenage daughters. Despite his lack of expertise or ability, he has coached his daughter’s basketball team for several seasons.  He grew up in Pittsburgh from the time he was three years old, so he bleeds black and gold and looks for any opportunity to attend Penguin, Pirate and Steeler games, as well as his negotiated one trip per year back to Happy Valley to reconnect with his Penn State roots.
